Rum Sour Cocktail

Updated: Apr 6, 2022

Sweet, tart and refreshing! A Rum Sour cocktail is incredibly simple to make and I reckon there's a good chance you already have all of the ingredients you need.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that just about all of you have probably had a ‘Sour’ at some point. If you've had a margarita, then you’ve had a Sour.

That’s because a Sour is one of the main categories of cocktails, with the Whisky Sour being one of the more common varieties. Often you’ll see a bartender throw together a sour with their house spirit, maybe even bottled lemon juice and send their patrons on their way. That's not the kind of sour we are making here today. Quality ingredients are needed, there is little for them to hide behind.

This drink is all about balance, the sweetness of the syrup, the acidity from the lemon and the depth of flavour from the rum. Combine that with the frothy egg white, yes you read that correctly, egg white and an aromatic finish from the bitters, you are left with a very pleasant cocktail on the palette.

Adding the egg white emulsifies the cocktail, making it super smooth to drink and the foam on top gives it a bit of a sophisticated look and feel. This could just be your new favourite cocktail!

Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 50ml Welsh Soul Rum

  • 1 Egg White

  • 1 tbsp Fresh Lemon Juice

  • 1 tbsp Simple Syrup

  • 2- 3 dashes of Bitters to garnish

Method

  1. Combine the rum, egg white, syrup and lemon juice in a shaker. Shake for about 10 seconds to froth the egg white.

  2. Next, fill the shaker with ice and shake until it is very cold to touch

  3. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer into a chilled glass and garnish with a few dashes of bitters.
