Soul and Cola

Updated: Jun 14, 2022

A true classic, the rum and coke. Let’s be honest this is the simplest of 2 ingredient cocktails.

The type of rum you choose here is less significant, whether it be white or light rum, spiced rum or dark rum. But of course, we think using Welsh Soul, with its light spice and subtle orange notes makes a far superior version of this classic.

"This Rum and coke tastes a lot like I'm not going to work tomorrow!" – every rum drinker, ever.

What is far more important is the Cola you choose, since it makes up most of this delicious drink. An obvious, yet great and readily available choice is the classic Coca Cola. Which has not earned its reputation by coincidence, Coke’s fairly high acidity level makes a great match for rum. Alternatively, you could use a Cola from Fever-Tree or Fentimans which pack some great flavours and are made specifically for cocktails. Another excellent choice is Karma Cola from Karma drinks, which is delicious and has a really great story.

Adding a little freshly squeezed lime juice, or a lime wedge can never hurt! Even though that would technically turn it into the origin of this drink, a Cuba Libre. We like to use our favourite tumbler and a few ice cubes.

The next order of business is proportions, really it's up to you! However, keep in mind a 2-to-1 or 3-to-1 mix of cola to rum generally leads to the most balanced drink. If you prefer a little more Soul in your glass, you’ll find no judgement here…
